Yesterday was National Relaxation Day, which in theory is a great idea. But I’ve been reading up on stresslaxing— the unease and guilt some people feel when trying to relax — in self care journals. This isn’t actually a new concept.
Back in 1983, the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology presented the findings of a tiny study (only 14 people, so it wasn’t even close to being a trend back then) on relaxation-induced anxiety. The paradox presented was that learning to relax could cause more anxiety than positive benefits. So maybe a single day dedicated to relaxing might be a bit more stressful than anticipated?
