Hello, Gorgeous!
Over the weekend I was quoted extensively in Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) about First Lady of France Brigitte Macron’s beauty routine.
This is notable for several reasons, but most importantly because Macron is 72-years-old and at no point was her age mentioned in the article. So, why do I mention it here, you may ask? Because I think it’s freaking amazing, that’s why. Instead of exclusively discussing pre-pubescent influencers, this article did a deep dive into the look of a woman with years on her face. And I’m here for it.
Beauty before age
There’s been a lot written about the significant age difference between the Macrons, with her being about 24 years older than her former student now husband. Think Boomer (woman) married to a Millennial man to give you an idea of the culture gap that goes beyond the age gap.
I’ve never been much of a cougar type, though the summer before last I did dally with someone 21 years younger than me. You know what I discovered? It didn’t actually matter at all. We liked each other for a while until we didn’t. I didn’t change my look, my makeup or my attitude. And I certainly didn’t feel that I was too old for him or he too young for me. We just were.
Which brings me back to Brigitte.
Brigitte Macron is an interesting cultural icon because she seems to embrace the look of Heather Locklear on Melrose Place evolving into the First Lady of France. Not the attitude as much as a California girl look evolving to first lady status. Her defined blue eyeliner at the waterline mimic Princess Diana. Her hair (which I’m 99.99% sure is a wig, but again, don’t care) embraces the aesthetic of Linda Evans as Krystal Carrington on Dynasty.
Mme. Macron is an amalgam of the beauty influences that existed before beauty influencers. And she’s somehow alchemically made this her signature look. It works for her. And I love the fact that WWD highlighted a septuagenarian’s beauty look and asked me to help break it down.

I always compare my age to famous folks! I think it’s because I look younger than my advanced age
