While America seems obsessed with true crime podcasts, I prefer to find more gentle virtual escapes. Fortunately for all of us, there is a sweeping movement toward TV shows and books featuring heroines of a certain age who are far from perfect moving to beautiful places (and frequently solving mysteries). They fall in love not just with the landscape, but with the unexpected hunky or dorky men they meet there.

Signora Volpe just returned for its second season and it’s worth watching season one to catch up.
Sylvia Fox (Emilia Fox) is a former spy who went to Panicale, Italy for her niece’s wedding and true to escapist TV - she stayed there. There’s a charming if caddish ex-husband (himself a spy), a droll sister married to an Italian doctor, and the extremely swoon-worthy Giovanni Cirfiera playing Capitano Riva.
