Hello, Gorgeous!
I love when you write to me with your burning questions. Here’s a variation/ compilation of one I’ve received from several of you:
What’s the deal with all those expensive mini versions of mini makeup products? I’m thinking of taking some on vacation. Am I destroying the planet by using them?
Some hard truths about mini makeup products
The beauty industry has a problem with plastic waste. It’s estimated that 120 billion units of packaging are produced annually. More disturbing yet is the fact that about 70% of the package parts aren’t recycled or recyclable. And if you want to be really depressed, even if made out of recyclable plastic or parts, mini makeup products are not recyclable at all, because they’re too small to fit into standard recycling sorting machines.
So, in theory using makeup minis when traveling is a great idea. In practice, you’re probably helping contribute to landfills. What now?
When I started writing this post I was going to talk about how great minis are for travel. Again, in theory they are. They take up less room, are TSA-friendly and allow you to test out a product before splurging. But after spending some time researching the way they’re made, distributed and disposed of, I’m having a harder time recommending mini makeup products. That said, there are still a few reasons that minis might be an option for you.
When mini makeup products still work
You’re so sensitive. If you have sensitive eyes or loads of allergies, you might be best off using individual products for special occasions Sometimes trying a small mascara and only using for a few days can help prevent future eye infections.
The packaging is biodegradable or actually recyclable. If you’re so inclined, you can start looking for packaging that doesn’t contain plastic.
You’ll reuse the container. I regularly refill my Paula’s Choice Mini Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner. It’s a bit fiddly to remove the plastic inner cap, but once you get the hang of it you’ll have the perfect travel size zit slayer for every trip.
You’re arty. I’m only half joking on this one. If you upcycle products to make art or jewelry, these can be cute or beautiful additions.
You’re more picky about your minis. Here’s another option, stop randomly accepting mini gifts from cosmetics retailers. Sure it’s tempting to grab all the gifts you can, but do you really use them? Consider limiting your use of minis to products you actually need or will use.
Do you use mini makeup products? (I mean they are sooo tempting!) Let’s meet in the comment section to discuss!

Thanks again for highligthing the problem with plastic packaging, while also offering solutions. The more you know...
Huh! I had no idea. I love mascara minis because they stay great (fresh? moist? gooey? 🙂) until you're done with them. Have to read this again - thanks!
