When powdering your nose meant more than powdering your nose

In the midcentury when beauty and salon culture became accepted, powdering your nose could mean that quite literally your nose was shiny and you needed to go powder it. Part of the hyper-femininity of midcentury beauty culture involved heavily ornamented compacts that were pretty enough to use in public for a quick touch-up.
