Hello, Gorgeous!

About two years ago a hair trend started creeping onto Instagram and TikTok. It was a bob that wasn’t quite a bob topping a shag that was more of a mullet. Back then the idea and ideal was to use color to highlight multi-tier layers. Think post-mermaid hair that was edgier, and let’s face it, extremely unflattering.

The nascent trend was called Hime hair (Hime is Japanese for princess) inspired by a style worn by Japanese nobility during the Heian era in Japan from about 794-1192 CE.

In those ancient times hair was worn as long as possible to create sheets of silky black hair. Then again, during the Heian period, faces were powdered excessively, teeth were blackened, and eyebrows shaved before being drawn up much higher on the face, so maybe not the best beauty era to emulate. But back to Jellyfish hair.

At the Grammys a few weeks ago, Miley Cyrus showed up with hair that trimmed into blunt edges including bangs, a partial bob and then longer layers.
