Storm Snacking Recap
Good Humor, good memories, and a Rubenesque reminder
Hello, Gorgeous!
It’s been a snacky kind of a weekend, what with all the snow and subsequent sloth. Lucky for me I have a snack accountability partner (let’s call her Dot). While Dot (an actual actuary) is VERY PRECISE about her snacking and texts me with every single morsel, I’m a bit more laissez faire about noshing. In my humble opinion, whether you had an ice cream cone with a single scoop, or an entire carton, it’s okay to simply say you had some ice cream. Speaking of which, I had some ice cream.
The taste of my childhood
Breyer’s recently introduced their Good Humor flavors, and I am here for them, especially Strawberry Shortcake. It has less to do with the actual ice cream and more to do with nostalgia. When we were kids, my big brother Jay used to very solemnly hold my hand and walk with me to the ice cream truck. He would almost always choose Good Humor Toasted Almond or Strawberry Shortcake. And so seeing my late brother’s favorites (and ingesting copious amounts of them over the blizzardy weekend) was the ultimate in comfort food. Sweet, bittersweet, and delicious.
Back to Dot. After her snack-filled weekend, my pal bemoaned her big stomach. This isn’t true. Dot has abs you could bounce coins off. But I digress. Whether or not she has the body of an ‘80s era aerobics goddess, there are worse things in life than having some jiggle in the middle. And so I sent Dot this delightful reel I found on Insta, in which African influencer Aketch Joy Winnie discusses why more rounded midsections are extremely desirable in her part of the world. In Africa, flat stomachs mean you’re not being fed well.

Beautiful women. But make them zaftig
In the paintings of Flemish 16th century artist Peter Paul Rubens, voluptuous, plump, and rounded women (who, me?) were considered the ultimate in desirability. Only the wealthy ate well, so those thick Rubenesque thighs meant you were monied in addition to being absolutely stunning.
In an era of Ozempic everything and ever dwindling body positivity, it can be hard to proudly hold onto the curves that God gave you. For today at least, I’ll simply listen to Winnie and repeat to myself: The bigger the belly, the more beautiful you are.
So did you have a snacktastic weekend as well? Any thoughts on any of the above? Let’s meet in the comments to discuss!
