Weekend Mode: They Stole Our Sleep But We've Got Options
International Women's Day, beauty finds, and yes — we're still grumbling about the time change
Hello, Gorgeous!
It’s going to be a busy weekend. On Saturday night/Sunday morning (the clock changes at 2am, so naming rights are yours) in most of the country they’ll be moving the clock an hour forward meaning we’ll lose an hour of beauty sleep (grumble, grumble, grrrrr). Since kvetching seems to be my default after the longest winter outside of a Game of Thrones episode, it’s interesting that March 8 is actually the earliest possible date DST can fall, since March 1 is also a Sunday. I feel like the timekeepers of the universe are conspiring to steal our sleep as early as legally possible.
Also this weekend, on Sunday, March 8, International Women’s Day is commemorated throughout much of the world. It feels like an important time to support women owned brands and also recognize the Woman, Life, Freedom (Zan, Zendegi, Azadi) movement of the women of Iran. If you haven’t read or watched Persepolis —Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir about growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution—this is the weekend for it. This is not a political newsletter, so let’s just leave it at that for now.
Onto the weekend goodness.
Plastic-Surgeon Approved Anti-Aging Treatments
Oh, Olay. How do you keep topping yourself every single time? While there are four new products in the Olay Regenerist Treatments collection, I find myself most obsessed with Regenerist Eye Wrinkle Correcting Treatment said to repair crow’s feet and eye wrinkles without procedures. A nice claim, but I can tell you that I woke up the morning after using it for the first time and kind of blinked at my reflection in the mirror til I realized I was noticing actual results. In a single night. Full disclosure, I’ve partnered with Olay on promotions and launches in the past, but this time this is one woman’s opinion and that opinion includes: OMG. Did this eye treatment really do what I think it did? ($35, Olay.com).
Sleep sounds
If you’re like me, you can only drift off when surrounded by beachy sounds or a whole lotta white noise (and pink noise. and brown noise). This weekend I’m testing out the new LectroFan EVO which has ten fan sounds, ten noise variations, and two new ocean surf sounds. My favorite part? It’s said to actually block intrusive noises so you can relax, concentrate, and fall asleep easier ($64, lectrofan.com)
Female beauty brand founders/leaders
I’ll be featuring products by these cool and interesting brands founded and/or run by women in the coming months. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek:
Footlogix: This one contains beauty info even I wasn’t aware of. I love the fact that this Canada-based brand has a lot of interesting terms we now take for granted. CEO/Founder Katharin von Gavel coined the term medi pedi more than 20 years ago in creating her line of pediceutical foot care. You can find pedi products and tools in over 50 countries, or shop at Footlogix.com.
muk hair: One of the more fun haircare brands out there. Co-founded by Janelle King and her brother Scott Reynolds, this serious results-oriented haircare brand is used by top stylists and colorists in the salon (there’s a full line of professional color for licensed professionals only), as well as at home by consumers to maintain their results between services. Find the entire line at Mukhair.us. If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, I always recommend starting with their hair quiz.
Obliphica: Here’s one that intrigues me. Entrepreneur Shalimar Maakar bought the brand soon after its founding. While seaberry AKA sea buckthorn berry, antioxidants, vitamins and omegas 3, 6, 9 and the very rare omega 7 can be found in skincare, you don’t often find it in hair products. Obliphica products are rich in all of these. Find the complete line at Obliphica.com.
Are you planning on catching up on your beauty sleep this weekend? Let’s meet in the comments to discuss!
