Hello, Gorgeous!
First up, while there will be a newsletter on Monday, your inbox will be sad and lonely on Tuesday and Wednesday as I’ll be taking off for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year (and again Thursday, October 2, for Yom Kippur). If you’re celebrating, I wish you a sweet, happy and healthy year. If you’re not celebrating or it’s not your holiday, I wish you a sweet, happy and healthy year. In other words, whatever your practice or lack thereof, I wish you all the best and hope we can all move back to a place of togetherness and hope.
Moving right along, the weekend beckons!
Here are some quick cute ideas for an instant yet somehow relaxing weekend makeover:
Color:
I just had a wonderful conversation with a friend who is also a friend of Hello Gorgeous! (Hi, Chelsea!). Chelse had asked for some hair color recommendations and while I’ll be doing a deeper dive in the coming weeks, I extolled the virtues of everything Overtone.
Whether you want a gentle color infusion or to simply jazz up your own color (or to cover grey) Overtones is a more natural and effective option. I think I’ll be trying the Golden Copper color depositing mask in the near future ($32, overtone.co, but you can also find it at Target).
It would seem that I’m not the only one crazy for crayons (okay, eyeshadow sticks) since I received a flurry of messages from people asking for more recommendations. I am in love with the new collection from Hard Candy: Eye Def Shadow Marker (my fave color is Pony, a tawny, suede colored neutral). While I wouldn’t quite define these as markers, they are long-lasting, color rich pencils available in shimmer, matte and lovely soft finishes. And, yes! Unlike many chalky pencils, these are super creamy and set quickly ($8, hardcandy.com). In case you struggle with makeup removal, Hard Candy also just launched their new Makeup Remover Spray that dissolves even tough makeup ($7, hardcandy.com).
Cook:
While I wasn’t initially salivating over the recipes in Cooking Fast and Slow: Easy, Comforting, (Mostly) Plant-Based Recipes for Busy People by Natalia Rudin, I find myself eager for soup and sweater weather. This is such a brilliant and beautifully put together cookbook with recipes that are super speedy and some that might take an hour or longer. Superfood smoothies, overnight oats in multiple ways, dips, potatoes, soups. Okay. I guess I am salivating (Pre-order for $28, Amazon).
Boot:
I’ll admit that I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to boots and generally look for the higher pricetags as a sign of quality. I was very pleasantly surprised to check out White Mountain Tappy lug sole combat boots. These are beautifully designed and come in a very fall-friendly shade of Cordovan patent. They’re vegan, ridiculously comfortable from the first wearing and have a clever design with an inner zipper so you don’t have to tackle the laces every single time. As for the price tag, I had to do a double and triple look. (These beauties are now less than $30 on Amazon)
Reboot:
Remember the early oughties PBS mystery series with the always dishy Nathaniel Parker as the eponymous Inspector Lynley? They just dropped a reboot appropriately named Lynley with an equally appealing (albeit younger) Detective Inspector Thomas "Tommy" Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton played by Leo Suter with just the right amount of poshness. While I loved the original (Suh?) I think Sofia Barclay as Barbara Havers in the new version is just fantastic. Stream on Britbox.
Are you ready for the weekend? Also, I moved the weekend roundup back to Fridays from summer Thursdays - yea or nay? Let’s meet in the comment sections to discuss!
