Hello, Gorgeous!
A reader recently asked about edible beauty and skincare products. Aside from products you whip up from products in your pantry, why on earth would you want to snack on serum? Well, there’s actually a more practical reason for it. Five to be exact.
Skincare you can eat
Unlike edible underwear that seems more purpose driven, or edible flowers that elevate even the most poorly decorated cake edible skincare seems like a contradiction in terms. Only it isn’t. In a nutshell, edible skincare means the ingredients are edible-grade. And just because you can theoretically eat them, doesn’t mean that you should!
So what’s the deal with edible skincare anyway?
It’s all about the ingredients. The ingredients used in edible-grade skincare are so pure and natural that you can pour them into your smoothie if you’re so inclined. Not that you should. But having pure ingredients means you don’t have to worry about potentially harmful chemicals, additives or toxins being absorbed through your skin when applying your fave moisturizer. It’s next level ingredient-consciousness.
They theoretically work topically and internally. If you’re slathering on vitamins and antioxidants on your face that just so happen to be edible, it stands to reason these can help internally as well. For instance, when I work with clients with truly parched skin, I might tell them to start taking Vitamin E capsules in addition to using Vitamin E topically. It’s similar with ingredients like sea buckthorn oil, and aloe vera which provide deep hydration and barrier support while promoting healing. That said, some ingredients can cause stomach distress, so before you snack on your aloe vera sunburn treatment, think of your sensitive tummy. promote healing
Edible beauty embraces the idea of holistic health. Simply put, it shows that you care as much about what you put on your skin as what you put in your body. Which is probably why you’ll never see Gwyneth Paltrow slathering a melted Kit Kat on her skin.
It prioritizes better stewardship. Edible skincare brands are frequently also organic or sustainably sourced. They also generally don’t contain animal derived products. Knowing a product is edible is shorthand for made better with better for you ingredients.
It won’t harsh your mellow. If a product is edible, you can be 99.99% sure that it’s also free of excess or synthetic fragrance and preservatives making it (usually) great for those with sensitive skin.

Bottom line, you probably don’t want to eat your skincare, but there are many reasons it’s beneficial to use edible beauty products!
