Hello, Gorgeous!
From time to time I’ll receive questions from readers questioning basic rules about beauty. I love when that happens! The so-called rules are there because they work with classic looks or coloring, but they’re not set in stone. In fact, they’re not even rules.
Yesterday I ran into a friend who mournfully mentioned the fact that she’d never worn green eyeliner in her life. She said that with her hazel eyes she always felt like she was supposed to be wearing some variation of purple or navy blue. Not true at all. Here’s why.
Ignore the rules
Most makeup rules use the color wheel for influence, but it also relies on color theory instead of real life choices. So in the same way that green and red are opposite on the color wheel (as opposed to the one above), green eyes might be enhanced by burgundy. Yellow and purple are on opposite ends of the color spectrum, which is why hazel eyes are enhanced by plum shades. But again, these are suggestions not rules.
Wear whatever you want to
Based on the basic rules of color and blending, hazel eyes might not be enhanced by green shadow or eyeliner. But I’m not sure that really matters. As far as I’m concerned there are two main rules when it comes to beauty/makeup:
Wear what flatters you
Wear whatever you’re in the mood for
I look best in slim pencil skirts. In fact, whenever I visit mom and am wearing one she’ll inevitably say “You should always wear straight skirts!” But you know what? I also like wide pants and fluttery hems and styles that might not be quite as flattering. Case in point, today I’m wearing a bold swoosh of Maybelline Master Precise All Day Liquid Eyeliner in Emerald Green ($11, Ulta). Is it the most flattering color for my eye color? Nope. Not at all. Does it go with my green eyeglasses and fit my mood? Yes. Yes, it does.
In other words, if you’re in the mood for green eyeliner, just wear it. Not every day is about achieving perfection. Some days it’s just about breaking out of a beauty rut.
Are you skittish when it comes to testing out new colors on your face? Let’s meet in the comments to discuss!
