I love this take! I also cannot deal with all of the celebrity brands. For that matter, I'm overwhelmed by the sheer number of brands available now at places like Sephora and Ulta. I tend to stick to the tried and true, not the latest fad or flashy brand. Do you think there are ANY brands trying to market to GenX?

Bless you for that! For some reason I tried a bunch of the Lady Gaga products and ended up throwing them all out. And yes. There are way too many brands desperately vying for our attention. I do think some brands market to Gen X. I also think some do it really badly. They can't seem to isolate our quirks and habits and market with fear and despair. I'm going to make a note to myself to do a post about products marketing to Gen X that are worth using/supporting.

This is what I came here for!

I tend to roll my eyes at that over-the-top marketing. I know it sells to most people, because most people want a feel-good message. But I also think that these brands set themselves up for failure because they could have a misstep somewhere and the whole touchy-feely story gets trashed. Mast Chocolate is the first example that pops into my mind.

I never ever mean to disparage anyone for their taste, because everyone is different. But there definitely is lowest common denominator marketing that irks me. And yup. The feel-good (or feel naughty, even at Walmart) messaging does appeal to most. Agree about so many brands who shoot themselves in the bottom line. Interesting about Mast. Now I have to spend time digging around and then rolling my eyes!

Great post! The mental health message? Wha??? I did try a lip liner (don't remember why) and eh - didn't last and the color changed. Went back to Sephora (which is now discontinued?!?!) Also so much overkill with celeb brands.

Yeah, it felt a bit forced to me to fit into a marketing niche. Interesting! I never knew you tried it. And much sadness about Sephora discontinuing our fave and +1 on allllll the celeb brands.
